Champions Cup - Round 10 - End of Regular Season!
July 15, 2006
By Jason Gilkey
Well, the regular season is in the book, and it was definitely an interesting year. Week 10 featured some unbelievably close matches- two 10-8's, a 10-5, and a 15-13! Not to mention Greg Chamber's getting shot in the leg by someone on the grassy knoll. Before Week 10 results, here is the tournament layout and our regular season awards.

REGULAR SEASON AWARDS:
#1 Singles MVP: Ryan Lipman. Not bad for a rookie- swept Madrigal in 2 tough third-setters, only lost in last week versus the venerable Russell Buchi (Look up venerable). Good-naturedly handled the ribbing about his massive arms.

#2 Singles MVP: Ian Chadwell. Anyone see a pattern here? Undefeated so made this easy choice- besides his great play, he single-handedly dropped the average age of Jurassic Park down about 10 years.

#1 Doubles MVP's: Kearney Gay, Trey Brunsting, Brandon Black, Cal Cook, Mark Fentriss, Michael Moretti
#2 Doubles MVP's: Blain Smith, Scott Fielding
#3 Doubles MVP's: David Seibert, Daniel Gifford

Team of the Year: Big Ballers

WEEK 10 SUMMARY:
1. A player asked me this intriguing question: what is worse
a. Being dropped off for your men's league match by your mom in a minivan
or
b. Being the owner of a minivan and losing to the player that was dropped off by his mom in a minivan.
And I will add my own option:
c. Being the smart-aleck guy asking the question who has already lost to the player that was dropped off by his mom in a minivan, while the kid had a broken hand and had to play with one-handed backhand.

2. I have never seen Greg Chambers move so fast during warm-up. Then I discovered that Greg had used Icy-Hot on his groin, which then spread to his nether region (Nether region- now that's funny). And then after hopping around like a mexican jumping bean, he pulls his calf of all things! And he still was looking around for Fones for a race.

3. Russell Buchi can still freaking play. Of course, I did have to point out to Ryan Lipman that he just lost to someone THREE TIMES HIS AGE. How is that for an interesting number? Incredible match- nothing like watching guys have 50 ball rallies and they weren't pushing.

4. How about Randy Howell and Blain Smith beating Matt Bulow and Craig Menzie 15-13 in the third? GOOD GRIEF. I can't even count that high (remember- I was schooled in Oklahoma).

5. Mike Sparta was back playing singles. Gilkey has nightmares already. And Sparta barely lost! I always knew he was a singles specialist.

6. For those of you that say "Danny Birchmore is sooooo nice, he should write a children's book. Well- he already has! Can you believe it? It's called "The White Curtain," and is a fun little read for all of you with little ones (and also for Randy Howell- it even has pictures!).

7. It's a weird week when Captain Waldo appears, but Paul Jefferson and Daniel Gifford no-show. What weird solar eclipse caused that?

8. I am again going to start making scores up if people don't start writing them down.

9. In case someone wants to know how Blain got #2 doubles MVP- consider this- he won matches with Randy Howell AND Mark Srouji. For more information on Mark Srouji and Randy Howell's doubles play, please contact Greg Chambers.

10. How about Beckham and Rudd defeating Todd Smith and Matt Fones? WOW.
